There are many different voting systems around the world.  In fact, almost all of the world’s strongest and wealthiest democracies do not vote the way we do in Canada, the United States and Great Britain.  This section will contrast our own First Past the Post (FPTP) voting system with Proportional Representation (PR)which is the most popular voting system worldwide. 

Here is an chart compiled from voting data accessed from the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA). 

The trends to notice:

  • Countries using proportional representation (PR) have a significantly higher voter turnout than countries that use first past the post (FPTP).

  • Voter participation is showing a general decline worldwide, but it's steeper in FPTP countries.
